Stay Sun-Safe this Summer

Summer is finally here and all of the fun that comes with it! I’m sure you and your family have big plans for summer. If it involves being outdoors though, don’t forget one thing-sunscreen. Sunscreen is so important year-round, but especially for the summer months; whether you and your family are out by the pool, camping or going for a hike, please use it. It’s easy to forget, but it can definitely benefit you short and long term if you use sunscreen. Here’s why:

Sun Damage-Not only is it unhealthy, it is definitely noticeable. It is said that 80% of our skin’s aging is from the sun.  Sun damage can create wrinkles, dark spots and dryness to the skin. It’s hard to repair damage that is already there, so it’s best if you use sunscreen any chance possible.

Recommendations:

Learn how to shop for the perfect sunscreen. It is recommended that when buying sunscreen, to get 30 SPF or higher.  Below that number and you may not get the full protection that your skin needs. Also, make sure the sunscreen you pick out protects against UVA & UVB radiation. If not, your skin may not be protected against skin cancer.

TIPS:

  • Stay inside or in the shade during the hottest periods of the day: 10 am-3 pm.

  • Wear a hat. Even though it may not protect your entire body, it’ll at least protect your face.

  • Wear sunglasses that have UV absorption in order to not only protect the eyes, but the skin around the eyes.

  •  Reapply sunscreen every two hours.

  • For those that wear makeup: there is makeup-foundation that has SPF in it, that way you have less to worry about in the morning. Check out Estee Lauders BB Crème.

  • If you are fair complected, be more cautious out in the sun because you are more susceptible to sun burns and skin cancer.
