Our family story goes back to the early 80's. My grandmother, who possessed only a high school education, realized that my grandfather's job as a roughneck wasn't going to give them the life they so wanted. With that in mind and four daughters at home, she went back to school to become a nurse.
Only a few short years into her nursing career, she was physically unable to work the floor due to a car accident that left her with a broken back. During this time she had befriended a lady who started a nursing agency. Grandma saw what the future held as far as nurse shortages and quickly jumped in. Our healthcare staffing company was born. From there, she opened one location after another. By 1989, they opened the Kansas City office. My mother came in at this time to take on the role of office manager.
Mom was raising three children at the time and was a master at playing the work/life balancing game like a lot of working mothers. It was quite a balancing act as we operate 24x7x365--healthcare needs never take a vacation! My mother and father also realized the potential that this extremely difficult business presented to them in terms of long-term success for our family. My father's background in software lent him the opportunity to earn some actual ownership. He presented my grandparents with a proposal. He would "write" the code which would allow ALL the branches to process electronic payroll and billing. They accepted! My father had a day job and always has. So, this became a nights and weekends gig. I can remember going down in the basement where his office was and lying there while he developed code night after night. My folks had a piece of the pie!
