Kicking off the holidays in Kansas City...a special place!

The 86th Annual KCP&L Plaza Lighting Ceremony will take place this week, and it kicks off a magical time in Kansas City. I know we had a record 800,000 people at the Royals Parade a few weeks ago, but the Plaza Lights have drawn large crowds for 85 years and counting, which is an impressive feat!

The lighting ceremony brings together people from all over the metro area to collectively enjoy ourselves and our tight-knit community. Everyone is getting into the holiday spirit, having enjoyed Thanksgiving with family earlier in the day. And when they flip the switch on the lights, all you see are smiles on everyone’s faces. It’s a special moment in Kansas City each year.

As always, the lights will go on Thanksgiving Day, at 6:54 pm. This year, KC native Gillian Flynn (author of Gone Girl), gets the honor of flipping the switch. She follows in the footsteps of other KC successes, including Royals GM Dayton Moore, George Brett, Kate Spade, Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, to name a few.

Fortunately, the magic of the holiday season in Kansas City doesn’t end with the Plaza Lighting Ceremony. This Friday, Nov. 27, the KCMO Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony happens at 5:30pm at Crown Center, which is a must-visit during the holidays with its Ice Terrace skating rink, and a variety of holiday festivities to enjoy. This year Mayor Sly James will celebrate the KC Royals one more time, lighting the tree with Dayton Moore by his side.

For those of us interested in the cultural arts, there are several ways to enjoy time with friends and family this holiday season in KC. At the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the holidays come to life during several Kansas City Symphony concerts, including Classics Uncorked: Winter’s Dream, and the annual Christmas Festival, and the Kansas City Ballet’s annual Nutcracker performance. Not to mention the Kansas City Repertory Theatre’s always fantastic productions: A Christmas Carol and David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries.

Whether you’re a KC native, or looking to move to our great city, I hope you enjoy exploring all we have to offer as much as our #SquadBuilders team does!  Happy Thanksgiving!  #JoinTheSquad
