10 Books Every Nurse Will Want to Read

It's nice to slow life down every once in a while and grab a cup of coffee and read a good book. If you love stories that revolve around nursing, here are 10 great reads that you should start with.

1.The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down

By: Anne Fadiman

The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down "explores the clash between a small county hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos over the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy. Lia's parents and her doctors both wanted what was best for Lia, but the lack of understanding between them led to tragedy. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest, and the Salon Book Award, Anne Fadiman's compassionate account of this cultural impasse is literary journalism at its finest. The current edition, published for the book's fifteenth anniversary, includes a new afterword by the author that provides updates on the major characters along with reflections on how they have changed Fadiman's life and attitudes." -Amazon

2. Bed Number Ten

By: Sue Baier

Bed Number Ten is about "a patient's personal view of long term care.
Seen through the eyes of a patient totally paralyzed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, this moving book takes you through the psychological and physical pain of an eleven month hospital stay. BED NUMBER TEN reads like a compelling novel, but is entirely factual." -Amazon

3. Cutting for Stone

By Abraham Verghese

images (1).jpg

Cutting for Stone is about "Marion and Shiva Stone are twin brothers born of a secret union between a beautiful Indian nun and a brash British surgeon. Orphaned by their mother’s death and their father’s disappearance, bound together by a preternatural connection and a shared fascination with medicine, the twins come of age as Ethiopia hovers on the brink of revolution. Moving from Addis Ababa to New York City and back again, Cutting for Stone is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, medicine and ordinary miracles--and two brothers whose fates are forever intertwined."-Amazon

4.The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

By: Rebecca Skloot

9780307888440-us.jpg

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is about a woman whose "name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew."-Amazon

5. Notes on Nursing

By: Florence Nightingale

51s6GUbC4QL._AC_UL320_SR214,320_.jpg

Notes on Nursing is "from the best known work of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910), the originator and founder of modern nursing, comes a collection of notes that played an important part in the much needed revolution in the field of nursing. For the first time it was brought to the attention of those caring for the sick that their responsibilities covered not only the administration of medicines and the application of poultices, but the proper use of fresh air, light, warmth, cleanliness, quiet, and the proper selection and administration of diet. Miss Nightingale is outspoken on these subjects as well as on other factors that she considers essential to good nursing. But, whatever her topic, her main concern and attention is always on the patient and his needs." -Amazon

6. The Hospital at the End of the World

By: Joe Niemczura

7. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

By: Jean-Dominique Bauby

51Hu32VykgL._SX322_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a story that begins in 1995 when "Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor-in-chief of French Elle, the father of two young childen, a 44-year-old man known and loved for his wit, his style, and his impassioned approach to life. By the end of the year he was also the victim of a rare kind of stroke to the brainstem.  After 20 days in a coma, Bauby awoke into a body which had all but stopped working: only his left eye functioned, allowing him to see and, by blinking it, to make clear that his mind was unimpaired. Almost miraculously, he was soon able to express himself in the richest detail: dictating a word at a time, blinking to select each letter as the alphabet was recited to him slowly, over and over again. In the same way, he was able eventually to compose this extraordinary book. By turns wistful, mischievous, angry, and witty, Bauby bears witness to his determination to live as fully in his mind as he had been able to do in his body. He explains the joy, and deep sadness, of seeing his children and of hearing his aged father's voice on the phone. In magical sequences, he imagines traveling to other places and times and of lying next to the woman he loves. Fed only intravenously, he imagines preparing and tasting the full flavor of delectable dishes. Again and again he returns to an "inexhaustible reservoir of sensations," keeping in touch with himself and the life around him." -Amazon

8. Final Gifts

By: Maggie Callanan

51s2x4vw2FL._SY344_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Final Gifts is about how "hospice nurses Maggie Callanan and Patricia Kelley share their intimate experiences with patients at the end of life, drawn from more than twenty years’ experience tending the terminally ill. Through their stories we come to appreciate the near-miraculous ways in which the dying communicate their needs, reveal their feelings, and even choreograph their own final moments; we also discover the gifts—of wisdom, faith, and love—that the dying leave for the living to share. Filled with practical advice on responding to the requests of the dying and helping them prepare emotionally and spiritually for death, Final Gifts shows how we can help the dying person live fully to the very end." -Amazon

9Nursing Against the Odds

By: Suzanne Gordon

download.jpg

Nursing Against the Odds is about how "just as the population of older and sicker patients is about to explode, we have a major shortage of nurses. Why are so many RNs dropping out of health care's largest profession? How will the lack of skilled, experienced caregivers affect patients? These are some of the questions addressed by Suzanne Gordon's definitive account of the world's nursing crisis. In Nursing against the Odds, one of North America's leading health care journalists draws on in-depth interviews, research studies, and extensive firsthand reporting to help readers better understand the myriad causes of and possible solutions to the current crisis. Gordon examines how health care cost cutting and hospital restructuring undermine the working conditions necessary for quality care. She shows how the historically troubled workplace relationships between RNs and physicians become even more dysfunctional in modern hospitals. In Gordon's view, the public image of nurses continues to suffer from negative media stereotyping in medical shows on television and from shoddy press coverage of the important role RNs play in the delivery of health care."    -Amazon

5 Details to Include on Your Nursing Resume

Follow your dreams.png

If you're looking for placement in nursing, be it part time, per diem or long term, it's a good idea to update your resume.  How do you make YOUR resume stand out in a sea of nursing applicants? Here are 5 details that are important to Nurse Managers and Supervisors that you might want to include, if applicable.

1. Professional Affiliations - There are so many potential affiliations and groups to which nurses may belong.  If you belong to Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), put that down. Be sure to include the affiliation name and the date you joined or were admitted.  Be sure to note any special achievements or offices held.

2. Licensure and Certification Details -  It is recommended to include type of license (RN, LPN, NP, etc.), licensing state and expiration date.  Whether or not to include the license number on your resume is up for debate, due to privacy issues, but your license number is a matter of public record. Essentially, you are making it easier on the recruiter, who will dig in and find it anyways.

3. Your availability - Even if you're applying for a temporary job, you should indicate if you desire permanent placement or are willing to relocate.  Are you able to work 12-hour shifts? Mornings or days only?  Better include that information.

4. Computer Knowledge or Experience - Gone are the days of paper-only medical records.  If you have experience with Electronic Health Records and/or Medical Records, include this information. Do you have any other relevant computer skills?  Billing codes?  If you are proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, it's worth noting as well.

5. Note your accomplishments AND specific daily duties - Noting accomplishments tells potential employers what you did that resulted in tangible results for your employer. Accomplishments are generally more project-driven and one-off things as opposed to listing out your duties, which might be daily or weekly occurrences. A listing of duties, while important, does little to separate you from the pack.
